Who needs to spend money and time going to spa when it’s so simple to make DIY face masks at home?! DIY beauty products are a great way to save money, be in control of the ingredients in your products, and take care of your skin naturally.

DIY Face Masks
In an effort to take better care of my skin (the largest organ of our bodies), I’ve been researching and testing out homemade face masks. I needed something economical, simple, and natural in my regimen, and now you can have the same. It’s hard to remember to take time for yourself in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but a once-a-week face mask can be a great way to rejuvenate your skin and soul.

Avocado– They are an excellent source of Vitamins A & C; their fats and compounds can help improve dry skin and protect from skin damage. [6]
Banana– Their silica content is believed to help increase collagen and reduce wrinkles; they are rich in antioxidants that help moisturize your skin; their Vitamin A content can help reduce inflammation. [5]
Honey– It’s packed with components beneficial for your skin; it helps balance bacteria on your skin and reduce acne; as a natural exfoliant, it can remove dry skin and reveal healthy new skin cells. [9]
Yogurt– It can help balance out your skin’s moisture; with its natural probiotics it can act to reduce inflammation and fight bacteria; it supports increased elasticity in the skin. [4]
Oats– They help soothe irritations and soak up excess oil that can clog pores and trap dirt; their antioxidants help balance out skin irritations. [8]
Matcha Tea– It has been shown to carry anti-inflammatory properties and prevent excessively oily skin by controlling the production of sebum; high in chlorophyll, it is excellent at cleansing pores. [2]
Activated Charcoal– It can bind to some toxic substances and prevent them from absorbing into the body; it helps remove impurities from the skin and absorb excess oil. [7]
Clay (Kaolin, Bentonite, Rhassoul, French green)– Bentonite clay is believed to be capable of absorbing oils and bacteria from the skin; it has a clarifying effect on the skin which makes it great for oily skin types. Kaolin clay is rich in minerals and an excellent gentle exfoliant; it is more appropriate for sensitive or dry skin. French green is the most versatile of the clays, has a high concentration of minerals, and is rich in antioxidants to detox the skin. Rhassoul clay is rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium which can help hydrate and revitalize the skin. [3]
Jojoba Oil– It is a gentle oil that moisturizes, acts as an antioxidant, and contains antimicrobial properties. As a humectant ingredient, it attracts water to the top layer of the skin and works to keep you hydrated. [10]
Coconut Oil– It can help moisturize skin, relieve inflammation, accelerate wound healing, and treat acne. If you have oily or sensitive skin, it could cause irritation or blocking of pores. [1]
Essential Oils

These essential oils are commonly found in natural skin products and have varied benefits to your skin’s health. They can help reduce wrinkles, lessen acne or blemishes, reduce inflammation and puffiness, even out skin tone, and aid in the general health of your skin.
7 DIY Recipes
It’s simple to play around with any of these recipes or other combinations of these ingredients in your DIY face masks! If you’re new to any of these ingredients, it’s recommended that you do a patch test on a small area of your skin first to see how it reacts.
If you’re using ingredients that require refrigeration, make sure to store your face mask in a container in the fridge. If anything develops mold, throw it out before using. I recommend making a small batch for 1-2 time use for anything that requires refrigeration, as they won’t last as long as a shelf-stable version.
For use, start with a clean face, gently apply a thin layer of the mask to your face (avoiding your eyes), leave it on for 20-30 minutes, rinse it off with cool or lukewarm water, and pat dry with a towel. Use your face mask once a week for optimal care.
My favorite face mask is the Honey Mask! It lasts for such a long time, and I love the way it leaves my skin.
